Cyclist David Lozano is part of the professional team Novo Nordisk, made up of athletes who suffer from type 1 diabetes. Lozano shared with Luis Gerardo Bucci what it was like to win the seventh stage of the Tour of Rwanda after the team was teased by the press.

I would say the most rewarding thing is the fact that I am not just here to race bikes; I am racing to inspire, educate and empower people affected by diabetes across the globe. To have that message on my back whenever I ride is pretty sweet.

During a late-season ski training session, some of my teammates and I decided to go through the terrain park to get to the chairlift from the bottom of the training course. I lined up for the largest jump in the terrain park, which required a lot of speed to make the sweet spot in the landing. Unfortunately, because I was on race skis, I had far too much speed and landing about 10 meters past the landing.

The memories I have are very fuzzy. It was a weekend, and all my family was home. I had been feeling really unwell and spent the day lying on the couch in front of the TV. Fast forward to that evening, and I was unable to stand up on my own. That’s when my parents became concerned and checked my resting heart rate. It was 130 beats per minute. At that point, they decided that I needed to go to the hospital and be seen by a doctor. Once we got to the hospital, it was a sequence of fortunate events that are the reason I can write this today.
